Playable prototype

Most game ideas sound better than they play. A prototype tells you which kind yours is, for a fraction of the cost of a full game.

We build the core of the game in Unity with simple placeholder art: the main mechanic, the controls and a level or two. You play it on your own phone, share it with your team, players or a publisher, and decide what to do next with something real in your hands.

What's included

  • A short workshop to define the core mechanic
  • Playable build of the core loop in Unity
  • Placeholder art, so the time goes into gameplay
  • Touch controls tuned for phones
  • Builds on your phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing
  • One round of changes after you've played it
  • A written summary: what works, what doesn't and what a full game would take
  • The Unity project, handed over to you

How it works

  1. Define

We agree the one question the prototype has to answer, and what's left out.

  2. Build

Usually two to four weeks of development, with a build to play every week.

  3. Play

You test it yourself and with players. We adjust the feel based on what you see.

  4. Decide

We write up the results and, if it's worth continuing, a plan and estimate for the full game.
